Keeping Family Court Judges In Less Legal Garb

There are two sections to the Family law.  We have the family court and the family division of the high court.  In general, most family cases will be heard in the family court with a limited nmber of cases being heard in the family diviison of the high court.  for example cases involving child abduction involving another country and some cases involving the inherent jurisdiction of the high court.  The family diviison of the high court also hears appeals from certain decisions made by circuit judges and recorders in the family court.  The family court and family division of the high court are headed by the president of the family division.

Unlike other courts, judges of the family court and family division of the high court do not generally wear judicial robes or wigs and the proceedings are more informal than those held in criminal court.   This is to help protect the parties to often very sensitive and distressing cases to feel less anxious.
